LINK Project Proposal
Miles Rivera
Internship Placement: I will be interning at the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) in Winter Park, CO. NSCD teaches a variety of winter and summer sports and activities to individuals with almost any physical, cognitive, emotional or behavioral diagnosis, and more than 3,000 children and adults with disabilities participate in their programs each year. Their mission statement is “We enable the human spirit through therapeutic sports and recreation.”
Mentor: My mentors are Tony Peters and Cynthia Washburn. Tony began as a CSU intern for the NSCD 24 years ago, and is now one of the program supervisors. Cynthia is a double amputee and Paralympic athlete and is now a program coordinator for the NSCD. What I hope to gain from my mentors is experience in instructing and teaching snowboarding, working with people with different disabilities, and knowledge of what it is like working for a non-profit organization.
Goals: Some goals that relate to my internship would be becoming a better snowboard instructor to help prepare me for possibly, and very likely, working as a snowboard instructor next year and years after. Also learning how to be a good worker/employee in an industry that I have not worked in before is something I would like to achieve.
Project: My project with my partner will be media based, and so far the idea we have is a promo video for NSCD that could reach an audience to show what NSCD does and could direct people to volunteering with them. This would help NSCD by having more volunteers and educating more people either locally or through the internet about NSCD. This project will probably teach me video editing and filming skills and marketing.
Research: The skills and knowledge that I will need to gain and develop for this project will be more editing and filming skills, and marketing skills to make the video fulfill its purpose. I will also need to learn a lot about my internship during my internship because it will be in the project.
Process: To make sure that my project is ready by the end of my internship and exhibition I will need to plan and use my time wisely on our office days for editing and planning and our work days to film and work. If it is necessary and it probably will be, I will need to spend some free time after work or on our off days to work on the project and stay up to date with our other LINK work.
Overcoming Obstacles: The only obstacles with setting up this internship were gaining the knowledge on what needed to be done to make everything work. That includes figuring out lift tickets, off days, food budge, and who will be staying with us. All of those were just handled when they came up and I think I lucked out with how smoothly everything flowed together and set up.
Reflection: I am super excited for my LINK internship and I can’t wait to get out of school and do something really cool for three weeks. I think it is a great privilege that I am going to be able to do this internship and I think it is going to be an awesome experience.
